The former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa has been disqualified for contesting elections for a period of 10 years. Tamil Nadu government has recently issued a gazette notification.
The notification clearly says "“Consequent upon the conviction of Selvi J Jayalalithaa, Member of the Legislative Assembly, she stands disqualified for being a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from the date of conviction, i.e., the 27th day of September, 2014 for the period of her sentence (four years),She shall continue to be disqualified for a further period of six years since her release in terms of the existing Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.”
Jayalalithaa has been convicted by the court in a 18 yrs old disproportionate assets case by the court for which she was sentenced for 4 yrs jail and a fine of 100 crore.She was released from the Jail on October 17 when she was granted bail by the Supreme Court of India
